Chips by Jaakko Virtanen

Dubai Triptych by Cliff Single

Drawing on the success of this competition, started in 2009, Dubai Drama Group has launched its third annual playwriting competition, ‘Write Now! III’.

The purpose of the competition is to reach out to find talented and promising writers from every corner of the country. Previous years have seen a very high number of entries from a range of ethnic backgrounds, including Emirati writers. Building on the success of the first year, last year again saw an exceptionally high standard of entries and once more Dubai Drama Group was able to produce and perform eight of the best pieces for the public.

Exploring the Culture of the UAE

Sticking with the wish for locally inspired pieces, the Committee has set the theme for this year as “Eat, play, love: your journey through Dubai”. Writers are encouraged to think about every aspect of life, be it business, leisure, relationships or the challenges we all face in a rapidly expanding melting-pot country.

There is no age limit and the DDG is particularly interested in receiving more scripts from Emirati writers and from writers living in all of the Emirates. Entries should strictly be no longer than ten minutes long in performance time. There should also be a maximum of four characters in each entry. Writers may submit a one-act play, a stand-alone scene or indeed a series of sketches. There are no restrictions on content, style or substance and writers are encouraged to push creative boundaries.

As in previous years, Dubai Drama Group will cast, direct and produce the best entries and the winner will be decided by the audiences, who will vote for their favourite pieces.

The deadline for the competition is Sunday, October 23rd and entries should be submitted as a Word document by email to info@dubaidramagroup.com with the subject line: Entry for Write Now III.

Dubai Drama Group is launching its 2011/12 programme with Harold Pinter’s most famous and frequently‐performed play: The Birthday Party. First performed in 1958, the play has had a huge influence on modern theatre, and the word ‘Pinteresque’ has entered the language to denote the unique atmosphere and style of his plays: encompassing a sense of menace, uncertainty and unpredictability.

The Birthday Party is a “comedy of menace” about Stanley Webber, a lodger in a rundown boarding house in an English seaside town with an uncertain past. Two mysterious strangers arrive, supposedly on his birthday and turn Stanley’s apparently innocent birthday party into a nightmare.

Harold Pinter’s writing career spanned over 50 years. As well as The Birthday Party, his works include The Homecoming (1964), and Betrayal (1978), each of which he adapted to film. His screenplay adaptations of others’ works included The Servant (1963), The GoBetween (1970), The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981), The Trial (1993), and Sleuth (2007). He was nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Writing. He also directed or acted in radio, stage, television, and film productions of his own and others’ works. Pinter received over 50 awards, prizes, and other honours, including the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2005 and the French Légion d’honneur in 2007.

Our production of The Birthday Party will be held in thejamjar in Al Quoz on the evenings of October 7th, 8th, 13th, 14th, 15th with the performance commencing at 7.30PM. Entrance is by donation on the night. Further details, including a location map, can be found on http://www.thejamjardubai.com/ and the Dubai Drama Group Facebook page.
